How to Care for and Maintain Your Carpet

How to Care for and Maintain Your Carpet

A quality carpet is one of the most significant investments you can make in your home. With the right care and maintenance, a well-made wool or wool-blend carpet can look beautiful for 15 to 20 years or more. Neglect it, and even the finest carpet can look tired and worn within a few years.

After more than 25 years supplying and fitting carpets across London — from Chiswick and Richmond to Chelsea, Wimbledon and Kensington — we have seen what makes the difference between a carpet that ages gracefully and one that doesn't. Here is our complete guide to keeping your carpet in top condition.

Daily and Weekly Care

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming is the single most important thing you can do for your carpet. Dirt and grit that settles into the pile acts like sandpaper, cutting the fibres every time someone walks across the carpet. Regular vacuuming removes this debris before it causes damage.

  • High-traffic areas (hallways, stairs, living rooms) — vacuum at least twice a week
  • Bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms — once a week is sufficient
  • Under furniture — move furniture occasionally and vacuum underneath

Use a vacuum with adjustable suction and a rotating brush head for best results. For loop-pile carpets (such as sisal or berber), avoid rotary brush heads as they can snag the fibres — use suction only.

Vacuum in Multiple Directions

For a thorough clean, vacuum in two directions — along the pile and then across it. This lifts the fibres and removes more embedded dirt than a single-direction pass.

Use a Good Quality Doormat

Prevention is better than cure. Place a good quality doormat at every entrance to your home to trap dirt, grit and moisture before it reaches your carpet. Encourage family members and guests to wipe their feet — or better still, remove shoes at the door.

Dealing With Spills and Stains

Speed is everything when it comes to spills. The faster you act, the better your chances of removing the stain completely.

The Golden Rules

  1. Act immediately — do not let a spill dry or set
  2. Blot, never rub — rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the pile; always blot from the outside of the stain inward
  3. Use cold water first — hot water can set protein-based stains (blood, milk, egg)
  4. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first to check it does not affect the colour

Common Stains and How to Treat Them

Red wine Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately. Apply cold water and blot again. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid with two cups of cold water and apply with a clean cloth, blotting repeatedly. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Coffee and tea Blot immediately. Apply a solution of one teaspoon of washing-up liquid and one teaspoon of white vinegar in one litre of warm water. Blot repeatedly, then rinse with cold water.

Mud Allow the mud to dry completely before attempting to remove it — trying to clean wet mud will spread it further. Once dry, vacuum up as much as possible, then treat any remaining mark with a mild carpet shampoo.

Pet accidents Blot up as much liquid as possible. Apply a solution of cold water and white vinegar (equal parts) and blot thoroughly. Finish with a specialist enzymatic pet stain cleaner, which breaks down the proteins that cause odour. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners — the smell can encourage pets to return to the same spot.

Grease and oil Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the stain and leave for 15 minutes to absorb the grease. Vacuum up, then apply a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent with a clean cloth, blotting carefully.

Chewing gum Place a bag of ice cubes over the gum to freeze it solid, then carefully break it away from the fibres. Remove any residue with a dry-cleaning solvent.

Protecting Your Carpet

Use Carpet Protectors Under Furniture

Heavy furniture can crush carpet pile permanently. Place felt or rubber carpet protectors under the legs of sofas, chairs and beds to distribute the weight and prevent permanent indentations.

Rotate Furniture Occasionally

Moving furniture slightly every year or two prevents uneven wear patterns and gives crushed pile a chance to recover.

Use Rugs in High-Traffic Areas

Placing a rug over your carpet in the highest-traffic areas — in front of sofas, at the foot of stairs, in doorways — protects the carpet underneath and is far cheaper to replace than the carpet itself.

Keep Curtains and Blinds Closed in Direct Sunlight

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade carpet colours, particularly in south-facing rooms. Keep curtains or blinds partially closed during the brightest part of the day to protect your carpet.

Professional Cleaning

Even with excellent regular maintenance, carpets benefit from a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months. Professional cleaning removes the deep-seated dirt, allergens and bacteria that regular vacuuming cannot reach.

Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning)

This is the most effective method for deep cleaning carpets. Hot water and cleaning solution are injected deep into the pile under pressure, then extracted along with the loosened dirt. It is highly effective and leaves carpets genuinely clean — not just surface-clean.

Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning methods use minimal moisture and are suitable for carpets that cannot tolerate prolonged dampness, or in situations where fast drying is important. The results are generally not as thorough as hot water extraction.

Choosing a Professional Cleaner

Always use a reputable, NCCA-registered (National Carpet Cleaners Association) professional. Ask about their method, the products they use, and how long the carpet will take to dry. Avoid very cheap services — poor technique or harsh chemicals can damage your carpet permanently.

Caring for Specific Carpet Types

Wool Carpets

Wool is naturally resilient and responds well to regular vacuuming. Avoid over-wetting wool carpets during cleaning — wool absorbs moisture readily and can shrink or distort if soaked. Use wool-safe cleaning products only and ensure thorough drying after any wet cleaning.

Wool-Blend Carpets

Similar care to pure wool, but slightly more tolerant of moisture. Still use wool-safe products and avoid harsh chemicals.

Synthetic Carpets (Polypropylene / Nylon)

Synthetic carpets are the most forgiving to clean and are generally stain-resistant. They can tolerate more moisture than wool and are compatible with most carpet cleaning products. However, they can flatten more easily in high-traffic areas, so regular vacuuming is still important.

Loop-Pile Carpets (Berber, Sisal, Seagrass)

Avoid rotary brush vacuum heads which can snag the loops. Use suction only. Be particularly careful with spills — natural fibre carpets like sisal and seagrass are not water-resistant and can stain or shrink if over-wetted.

When to Replace Your Carpet

Even the best-maintained carpet will eventually need replacing. Signs that it is time for a new carpet include:

  • Permanent matting or flattening that does not recover with cleaning
  • Persistent odours that professional cleaning cannot remove
  • Visible wear, thinning or bare patches
  • Rippling or buckling that cannot be re-stretched
  • Severe or widespread staining
