The first question to ask is: where is the carpet going?

Different rooms have very different demands. A bedroom carpet can prioritise softness and luxury underfoot, while a hallway or staircase needs something far more durable. Here is a quick breakdown:

• Bedrooms — This is where you can really indulge. Deep pile, soft wool carpets feel incredible underfoot and create a cosy, luxurious atmosphere. Colour and texture can be bolder here since the room sees less traffic.
• Living rooms — A balance of comfort and durability. Medium pile carpets in neutral tones tend to work well and stand the test of time.
• Hallways and stairs — These are the hardest-working areas in any home. You need a tightly woven, hard-wearing carpet — typically a loop pile or a short, dense cut pile — that can handle constant foot traffic without flattening.
• Children's rooms — Stain resistance is key. Look for synthetic fibres with built-in stain protection, or a wool-blend that is easier to clean.

The "pile" refers to the surface fibres of the carpet — how they are cut, looped or twisted. It has a big impact on both the look and the performance of the carpet.

The most common type. The loops are cut to create an upright, soft surface. Variations include:

• Saxony — Long, twisted fibres that create a luxurious, plush feel. Shows footprints and vacuum marks, so best for low-traffic rooms like bedrooms.
• Velvet / Plush — A smooth, uniform finish. Elegant and formal in appearance.
• Twist pile — Tightly twisted fibres that are more resilient and practical. A great all-rounder for living rooms and hallways.

The fibres are left as uncut loops, creating a textured, durable surface. Berber carpets are a well-known example. Loop pile is excellent for high-traffic areas as it resists flattening.

A combination of cut and looped fibres that creates pattern and texture. Adds visual interest and hides footprints well.

The fibre your carpet is made from affects how it looks, feels, wears and cleans.

Wool is the gold standard of carpet fibres. It is naturally soft, resilient, flame-resistant and biodegradable. Wool carpets tend to look better for longer and have a natural warmth that synthetic fibres cannot replicate. They are an investment — but one that pays off over time.

An 80% wool, 20% nylon blend is one of the most popular choices. The nylon adds durability and stain resistance while retaining most of the natural benefits of wool. This is a great choice for living rooms and bedrooms.

A budget-friendly synthetic option. Highly stain-resistant and easy to clean, making it popular for family homes and rental properties. It does not have the same luxurious feel as wool, but modern versions have improved significantly.

One of the most durable synthetic fibres. Resilient, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours. A solid choice for high-traffic areas.

The underlay is the layer fitted beneath your carpet, and it makes a bigger difference than most people realise. A good quality underlay:

• Extends the life of your carpet significantly
• Adds warmth and insulation
• Improves sound absorption
• Makes the carpet feel softer and more luxurious underfoot

We always recommend investing in a quality underlay — it is a false economy to spend money on a beautiful carpet and then fit it on a cheap underlay.

Colour is one of the most personal choices in flooring, but there are a few practical points worth keeping in mind:

• Light colours make a room feel larger and more open, but show dirt more easily.
• Dark colours are more forgiving with dirt and marks, but can make a room feel smaller.
• Neutral tones (warm greys, stone, natural beige) are the safest choice if you plan to redecorate or sell in the future — they work with almost any colour scheme.
• Patterned carpets are excellent for hiding wear and footprints in high-traffic areas.
