Not all wooden floors are created equal. The difference between a budget laminate and a properly graded engineered oak board is not just visual — it is structural, acoustic, and tactile. Here is what we stock and why it matters.

Solid hardwood boards — typically 18–20mm thick — are milled from a single piece of timber. Oak is the most popular choice for London homes: it is hard-wearing, takes stain and oil beautifully, and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. A well-maintained solid oak floor can last a century.

We source boards in a range of grades, from rustic character oak with natural knots and variation, to prime grade with a cleaner, more uniform appearance. Both are genuine hardwood — the choice comes down to the look you want.

Engineered boards have a real hardwood veneer bonded to a stable plywood or HDF core. This construction makes them significantly more resistant to movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity — which is why they are often the better choice for underfloor heating, basement conversions, or rooms that see wide seasonal variation.

The surface layer is genuine wood, so the look and feel is identical to solid. Many engineered boards can also be sanded and refinished at least once, extending their lifespan considerably.

For those who want something with more visual impact, we offer herringbone and parquet patterns in both solid and engineered formats. These classic layouts suit period properties and contemporary interiors equally well — and when fitted correctly, they are genuinely stunning.

Herringbone fitting is significantly more complex than straight-lay installation. It requires precise planning, careful subfloor preparation, and a fitter who has done it many times before. We have.

You can buy the finest oak boards available and still end up with a floor that disappoints — if the fitting is poor. This is one of the most important things we tell customers, and it is worth explaining in detail.

Wooden floors are unforgiving of an uneven or damp subfloor. Any high spots will cause boards to rock; any moisture will cause them to swell and cup. Before we lay a single board, we assess the subfloor thoroughly — checking for level, testing for moisture, and addressing any issues before they become problems.

Solid and engineered hardwood must be left in the room where they will be fitted for a period before installation — typically 48 to 72 hours. This allows the boards to adjust to the ambient temperature and humidity of the space. Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of gapping or buckling after fitting. We never skip it.

Wood moves. Even the most stable engineered board will expand and contract slightly with seasonal changes. Correct expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room — hidden beneath skirting or beading — are essential. Too small and the floor will buckle in summer; too large and the finish looks sloppy. Our fitters know the tolerances for every product we supply.

Depending on the subfloor type and the product being fitted, we use secret nailing, full-spread adhesive, or floating installation. Each method has its place. Using the wrong one — or using the right one incorrectly — compromises the floor's performance and longevity. We specify the correct method for every job before work begins.
